Fearful of his mother having another heart attack, Alex has to pretend communism is still alive whilst all around him Western capitalism is taking over.

A woman scarred by facial injury undergoes cosmetic surgery, and then sets off in search of her husband. Her husband does not recognize her, but because she looks a bit like his wife, he persuades her to pretend to be his wife so that he can claim his wife’s fortune. Slow burning and memorable, but for German leaners there are long silences with no dialogue.

In East Berlin prior to the fall of the communist regime, a Stasi surveillance officer is charged with collecting information on a political dramatist and his actress partner. As officer becomes increasingly drawn into their lives, his own attitudes begin to change. This film is often found on university German language course-lists. Grey but stirring and memorable.
